How to Edit Items in Ninety

Most items in Ninety are edited through a details panel — a sidebar that opens when you click the item's row. Changes you make in the details panel are saved automatically; there is no separate save button.

For quick edits to a title or due date, many tools also offer an inline edit option directly from the list view without opening the full details panel.

Who can edit items?

Any licensed user can edit items on their team's lists. Observers have view-only access and cannot make edits. Some fields — such as promoting a Rock to a Company Rock — are restricted to users with Manager-level permissions or higher.

How to edit Rocks in Ninety

Rocks are your team's 90-day priorities (quarterly goals). You can update a Rock's details at any time to reflect changes in scope, ownership, or timeline.

To edit a Rock:

  1. Click Rocks from the left navigation.
  2. Click the Rock's row to open its details panel.
  3. Update any of the following fields:
    • Title — the Rock's name and objective.
    • Status — on-track, off-track, complete, or canceled.
    • Due date — the target completion date (default is 90 days from creation).
    • Owner — the person accountable for the Rock's completion.
    • Primary team — the team the Rock belongs to.
    • Additional teams — other teams that should have visibility into this Rock.
    • Description — supporting context, success criteria, or the SMART methodology.
    • Milestones — the incremental steps toward completing the Rock.
    • Attachments — files relevant to the Rock.
    • Comments — updates or communication for the team.

Changes are saved automatically.

Promoting a Rock to a Company or Departmental Rock:

Inside the Rock's details panel, click the corresponding circle to mark it as a Company Rock or Departmental Rock. This designation elevates the Rock's visibility — Company Rocks appear on the Leadership Team's V/TO® Traction® page, and Departmental Rocks are pinned to the top of the team's Rocks list.

Only users with Manager or higher permissions can designate Company or Departmental Rocks.

How to edit To-Dos in Ninety

To-Dos are short-term action items, typically due within seven days. You can edit them from the To-Dos tool or the My 90 workspace.

To edit a To-Do's full details:

  2. Click the To-Do to open its details panel.
  3. Update any of the following fields:

    • Owner.
    • Due date.
    • Description.
    • Repeating cadence (if applicable).
    • Private status (team To-Do vs. private To-Do).
    • Team.
    • Linked items.
    • Attachments.
    • Comments.
    • Follow status.

To quickly edit just the title:

  1. Hover over the To-Do's row.

Overdue To-Dos: A To-Do that has passed its due date will show an overdue indicator. This clears automatically once the To-Do is marked complete or the due date is updated.

How to edit Issues in Ninety

Issues are problems, obstacles, or ideas that need to be addressed as a team. You can update an Issue's details or move it between the Short-Term and Long-Term lists at any time.

To edit an Issue:

  2. Click the Issue's row to open its details panel.
  3. Update any of the following fields:

To move an Issue between the Short-Term and Long-Term lists:

Right-click the Issue and select Move to Long-Term or Move to Short-Term from the dropdown. You can also use the clock icon at the top of the Issue's details panel to toggle between lists.

Long-term Issues also appear on the V/TO® Issues list, giving your leadership team visibility into systemic challenges that need to be addressed in the bigger picture.

How to edit Headlines in Ninety

Headlines are brief announcements shared during meetings. Only the title, description, and team can be edited on a Headline.

To edit a Headline:

  1. Click Headlines from the left navigation.
  2. Select the intended team from the Team dropdown.
  3. Click the Headline's row to open its details panel.
  4. Update the title, description, or team(s) as needed.

How to edit items during a meeting in Ninety

You can edit Rocks, To-Dos, Issues, and Headlines during an active meeting in the same way you would outside of it — click the item to open its details panel and make your changes. Updates made during a meeting are reflected in the tool immediately and persist after the meeting ends.

What can't be edited?

A few fields and states are not editable or have restrictions worth knowing:

  • Observers cannot edit any items.
  • Company and Departmental Rock designation requires Manager-level permissions or higher.
  • Completed items can still be edited, but consider whether the change warrants un-completing the item first to maintain accurate records.
  • Archived items can be edited after unarchiving them.
