How to Work with Maz in Ninety
Maz is the AI companion built into Ninety. You can work with Maz in two ways: ask it questions about your data across every team you can access, or have it take action for you, such as creating a Rock, updating an Issue, or entering a Scorecard score. Maz is also a reference source that helps you understand how Ninety works and the EOS® (Entrepreneurial Operating System®) methodology, so you can ask it how something works as readily as you ask it what's happening.
Maz is available to every user on any paid subscription plan, and it always works within your own permissions. Open it from the Maz button in the top-right corner of any page in Ninety.
Opening and managing a conversation
The Maz panel opens after you click the Maz button in the top right of any page; you do not need to navigate to a specific page to use it.
Open Maz. Click the Maz button in the top-right corner of any page in Ninety. When you start a new conversation, Maz suggests a few prompts based on the page you're currently viewing — select one, or start typing your own question.
Type your question or request. Ask about your data, ask how to do something in Ninety, or tell Maz what you want done. Plain language works, with no special formatting or syntax.
Review Maz's answer. Maz returns a response scoped to your role and permissions, interpreted through an EOS lens. Answers draw from across your Ninety data, surfacing connections between tools automatically.
Continue the conversation. Ask follow-up questions, drill into a specific finding, or pivot to a new topic. Each question builds on the last, so you do not need to re-explain context as the conversation continues.
To start fresh on a different topic, use the New Chat button to begin a new conversation.
Managing your conversation
Once a conversation begins, Maz keeps it open until you actively close or reset it. Three controls in the top-right corner of the sidebar manage this:
New chat icon: starts a fresh conversation. Your current chat is saved to your History, not lost.
Expand icon: opens the sidebar in a larger view.
Close (X): closes the panel. Your conversation stays saved in your History.
To minimize a conversation without ending it, click the minimize icon on the panel. The panel closes, and a blue dot appears on the Maz button in the top-right corner to confirm your conversation has been preserved. This works for any Maz workflow you have open — a chat, drafting a SMART Rock, the Scorecard Optimizer, and others.
To pick a minimized conversation back up, click the Maz button. Maz reopens it exactly where you left off.
Every conversation is also saved automatically. Open the History tab in the Maz panel to browse, search, reopen, or continue any earlier chat — see Viewing and Continuing Past Maz Chats.
Asking Maz about your data
Ask Maz a question in plain language, and it answers from your live Ninety data. Maz understands context, connects information across tools, and points out risks, trends, and gaps you would otherwise have to find by hand. Instead of moving between Scorecards, Rocks, Issues, and your V/TO® to piece together what's happening, ask Maz and get one consolidated answer. You can ask follow-up questions and drill into any finding.
What Maz can access
Maz sees the same data you do. The teams and items your role gives you access to in Ninety are the same teams and items Maz can see, including:
Current priorities
Rocks and milestones.
To-Dos.
Issues.
Company vision and structure
Vision/Traction Organizer® (V/TO®).
Accountability Chart®.
Performance metrics
Scorecard measurables.
Meetings and updates
Past meeting summaries and details.
Headlines and Cascading Messages.
Teams and people
Company directory.
Teams you belong to, with cross-team data available on request.
Knowledge Portal
Your company's internal documentation, training materials, and learning resources, including default content from Ninety and anything your team has added.
Working across teams
Maz sees every team your role gives you access to, so a single question can cover more than one team. Owners and Admins can reach every non-private team in the company. Managers, Team Members (Managees), and Observers can reach the teams they belong to, and Implementers can reach the companies they work with, scoped to their access.
For example, ask "Which of my teams has the most off-track Rocks this quarter?" or "Compare the Sales and Marketing teams' Scorecards for the last four weeks."
Understanding Ninety and EOS with Maz
Maz is also a reference for how Ninety works. Ask how to do something in any tool or what a setting does, and Maz answers from Ninety's help center and your company's Knowledge Portal.
Maz is also a reference for EOS methodology. Ask what makes a Rock SMART, what makes a good Measurable, or how IDS® works in a Level 10 Meeting®, and Maz explains the concept and how it applies in Ninety.
For example, ask "How do I add a milestone to a Rock?", "What's the difference between the Weekly and Monthly Scorecards?", or "How many Measurables does EOS recommend for a leadership team Scorecard?"
Having Maz take action
Maz can also do the work for you. When something needs to change, ask Maz in plain language to create a new item or edit an existing one, and it makes the change in Ninety after confirming any details it needs, such as an owner or a due date.
From a chat, Maz can create and edit the following items:
Item | Create | Edit |
Rocks | Add a new Rock. | Change the title, due date, or description. |
Milestones | Add a milestone to a Rock. | Change the due date or owner, edit the description, or remove a milestone. |
Accountability Chart Seats | Create a new Seat. | Update an existing Seat. |
To-Dos | Create a To-Do. | Edit an existing To-Do. |
Issues | Create a short-term or long-term Issue. | Edit an existing Issue. |
Headlines | Create a Headline. | Edit an existing Headline. |
Measurables (Scorecard) | Add a Measurable to a Scorecard group. | Edit its details, move it to another group, or remove it from a team's Scorecard. |
Scorecard scores | Enter a score for a period that doesn't have one yet. | Replace a score that's already entered. |
For example, after asking "Which of our Rocks do not have defined milestones?", you can follow up with "Add a milestone to each of those Rocks due at the end of the month." Maz adds a milestone to each Rock and applies the due date you specified.
Managing Measurables on your Scorecard
Maz can manage the Measurables on a team's Scorecard directly from the conversation. Ask in plain language to:
Create a new Measurable and add it to a group.
Edit an existing Measurable's details.
Move a Measurable to a different group.
Remove a Measurable from a team's Scorecard.
These Scorecard actions are available to Managers, Admins, Owners, and Implementers only. Observers and Team Members (Managees) can ask Maz about Scorecard data, but cannot create, edit, move, or remove Measurables.
Maz confirms the details with you before it creates, changes, or removes a Measurable, and two steps keep you in control of your Scorecard:
When creating a Measurable, Maz shows a summary of the new Measurable, including its title, owner, goal, and unit, and asks whether you want to change anything. Ask for any changes, then click Add Measurable to add it to the Scorecard. Maz then shows a View details button that opens the new Measurable's details panel.
When removing a Measurable, Maz shows a Remove Measurable button that you must click to confirm. Removing takes the Measurable off that group on the team's Scorecard — it does not delete the Measurable or its historical data.
Maz works best when it creates one Measurable at a time, so you can review each one before it reaches the Scorecard. To add several, ask for them one per request, or use Optimize Scorecard on the Scorecard page for a guided review of the whole Scorecard.
Entering and updating Scorecard scores
Maz can enter scores on a team's Scorecard for you. Ask in plain language to fill in a score for a period that's still empty or to change a score that's already there. This works on the Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, and Annual Scorecards, and one request can cover several scores, such as every empty week for a Measurable.
Entering a score through Maz follows the same permissions as typing it into the Scorecard yourself:
Team Members (Managees) can enter or change a score for any Measurable on the teams they belong to, including Measurables they don't own.
Managers, Admins, Owners, and Implementers can do the same on the teams they can access.
Observers can ask Maz about scores but cannot enter or change them.
Important: Maz doesn't ask before it replaces a score. When a period already has a score, Maz overwrites it as soon as you ask, with no confirmation step. Name the Measurable, the team, and the exact week or month you mean. To check the numbers before anything changes, ask Maz to show you the values first, and tell it to enter them after you've reviewed them.
For example, ask "Enter 42 for the New Leads Measurable for the week of October 5" or "Change last week's Website Visits score to 1,250." To see what Maz entered, open the team's Scorecard.
Turning a weekly Measurable into a monthly one
A Measurable can't move from the Weekly Scorecard to the Monthly Scorecard, and a monthly Measurable can't calculate its scores from a weekly one. To track a weekly number by month, create a monthly Measurable and ask Maz to work out its monthly scores from the weekly scores you've already entered.
Create the monthly Measurable. Switch to the Monthly tab on the team's Scorecard and click New Measurable on the group's card, or ask Maz to create it, for example: "Create a monthly Website Clicks Measurable in the Website Metrics group with a goal of at least 4,000."
Ask Maz to calculate the monthly scores. Name the weekly Measurable, the monthly Measurable, and the months you want, for example: "Calculate the August and September scores for the monthly Website Clicks Measurable from the weekly Website Clicks scores, and show me your math."
Review the calculation. Maz lists each weekly score it used and how it reached each month's total. A week that spans two months is split by days, the same way the Scorecard's View by Month view works. For example, a week running October 27 to November 2 adds 5/7 of its score to October and 2/7 to November.
Tell Maz to enter the scores. Maz adds each month's score to the monthly Measurable. Any score already entered for those months is replaced.
Tell Maz whether to total or average the weekly scores. Counts, such as clicks, leads, or sales calls, should be totaled, while rates and percentages, such as a close rate, should be averaged. Match the weekly Measurable's Show rollup data as setting.
The monthly Measurable isn't linked to the weekly one. When a new month ends, or if a weekly score changes after Maz has done the calculation, ask Maz to calculate and enter that month again.
If you only need to see weekly scores as monthly totals, you may not need a monthly Measurable. Set View by to Month on the Weekly Scorecard to see the same prorated totals. See Navigating the Scorecard Tool.
Note: Some actions are not yet available when you ask Maz, including deleting items and changing a Rock's team or quarter. For a guided, best-practice experience creating a Rock, building an Accountability Chart Seat, or optimizing a Scorecard, use the dedicated Maz buttons in those tools — for example, Help me draft a SMART Rock, Refine with Maz in a Rock's details panel, or Optimize Scorecard. See Creating and Refining Rocks with AI Assistance from Maz.
Who can use Maz
Maz is available to every user on any paid subscription plan. It always works within your own permissions: it sees the teams and items your role gives you access to, and it can change only what you could change yourself in Ninety.
Role | What Maz can see | What Maz can do for you |
Owners and Admins | Every non-private team in the company. | Ask questions, create and edit items, manage Measurables, and enter scores. |
Implementers | The companies they work with, scoped to their access. | Ask questions, create and edit items, manage Measurables, and enter scores. |
Managers | The teams they belong to. | Create and edit items, manage Measurables, and enter scores on those teams. |
Team Members (Managees) | The teams they belong to. | Create and edit the items their role allows and enter scores for any Measurable on their teams. They cannot create, edit, move, or remove Measurables. |
Observers | The teams they belong to. | Answer questions only. Observers cannot create or change anything through Maz. |
Preferences you save with Maz change only how it responds to you. They never change what Maz can see or do.

Asking follow-up questions
Some of the most useful Maz conversations combine a diagnostic question with a follow-up action. For example:
"Which of our Rocks do not have defined milestones?" → "Create a To-Do for each Rock owner to add milestones by [date]."
"Is our Accountability Chart aligned to our current Rocks, annual goals, vision, and Scorecard?" → "Create a long-term Issue regarding [the gap Maz identified]."
Tips for better answers
These tips will help you get the most value from your conversations with Maz.
Ask in plain language. No special syntax is needed. Ask the way you would ask a colleague.
Be specific. "Which Scorecard Measurables have been below goal for three or more weeks?" will return a more useful answer than "What's going wrong?"
Name the period you want. Maz can scope Scorecard answers to a window you specify — year to date, a particular quarter, or the same weeks a year ago. Say which window you mean rather than asking in general.
Build on the conversation. Within a chat, Maz keeps the context of everything you have discussed, so you do not need to re-explain what you are looking at with each follow-up; just ask your next question.
Revisit past chats anytime. Maz saves your conversation history, so starting a new chat won't lose your current one. Open the History tab to reopen or continue an earlier conversation. See Viewing and Continuing Past Maz Chats.
Tell Maz how you like to work. Ask Maz to call you by a nickname, keep answers to a set length, or always reply in another language, and it saves that preference for every future conversation. See Teaching Maz Your Preferences.
Complete data produces better answers. Maz draws from your live Ninety data. Complete Scorecards, current Rocks with milestones, and up-to-date Issues give it more to work with.
Copying and rating Maz's responses
Every Maz response has controls for copying its text and for telling Ninety's product team how it did.
Copying text from a Maz response
Click the copy icon at the bottom left of any Maz response to add the response to your computer's clipboard. Then, you can paste that response elsewhere as needed (such as in an Issue's description box, a working document, etc.).
Providing feedback
After receiving a response from Maz, you can click the thumbs-up or thumbs-down icon to open a bubble that will send your feedback directly to our product development team.
Write in your message to let us know anything about Maz's response, then click Submit. You can also click the Skip button to send your feedback (thumbs-up or down) without an additional message.
Frequently asked questions
Is Ask Maz different from Maz?
No. "Ask Maz" was the earlier name for chatting with Maz from the button at the top of every page, which is now the Maz button. It's the same Maz in the same panel, and everything in this article applies to it.
Can Maz see data from all of my teams?
Maz sees every team your role gives you access to. Owners and Admins can reach every non-private team in the company, Implementers can reach the companies they work with, and everyone else can reach the teams they belong to. Ask about several teams in one question, and Maz compares them for you.
Does Maz remember earlier conversations?
Every conversation is saved in the History tab, where you can reopen and continue it. See Viewing and Continuing Past Maz Chats. A new conversation doesn't carry over what you discussed in earlier ones. The exception is a preference you ask Maz to save, such as a nickname or a reply length, which applies to every conversation. See Teaching Maz Your Preferences.
Can Maz explain EOS concepts as well as Ninety features?
Yes. Ask how a tool works in Ninety or what an EOS concept means, such as a SMART Rock or IDS, and Maz answers from Ninety's help center and your company's Knowledge Portal.
Troubleshooting
Issue: Maz says it can't do something I asked.
Solution:
Check whether it's an action Maz can't take yet, such as deleting an item or changing a Rock's team or quarter. Make those changes in the tool itself.
Check your role. Observers can't make changes through Maz, and only Managers, Admins, Owners, and Implementers can create, edit, move, or remove Measurables.
If the issue persists, contact support.
Issue: Maz's numbers don't match what I see in Ninety.
Solution:
Ask Maz to re-check the specific figure. Maz reads your live data each time you ask.
If you reopened a chat from the History tab, its earlier answers reflect your data as it was at the time.
If the issue persists, contact support.
