How to Recover Deleted Rocks in Ninety
When you delete a Rock in Ninety, it's no longer lost for good. Deleted Rocks move to your team's Trash (the Deleted Rocks page), where they stay for 90 days, allowing you to restore them or permanently delete them. Every role except Observer can open the Trash; what you can restore or permanently delete depends on your role.
This feature is available on the Essentials plan and up on the web app.
Who can recover deleted Rocks
Access to the Rocks Trash depends on your role. Every role except Observer can open the Trash and view the team's deleted Rocks, but restore and permanent-delete permissions vary by role.
Role | See deleted Rocks | Restore | Permanently delete |
Owner, Admin, Implementer | All | All | All |
Manager | All | All | Only Rocks they own |
Managee/Team Member | All | Only Rocks they own | Only Rocks they own |
Observer | No access | — | — |
For a full breakdown of what each role can do, see User Roles and Permissions.
How to view the Rocks Trash
The Trash holds the deleted Rocks for the team you're currently viewing. To open it:
Click Rocks from the left navigation.
Select a team from the Team dropdown.
Click the ellipsis (…) to open the more actions menu to the left of the search bar.
Select View Trash from the options shown.
After the steps above, the Deleted Rocks page opens, listing the team's recently deleted Rocks with their status, owner, and deletion date. To return to your team's Rocks page, click Back to Rocks at the top left of the Deleted Rocks page.
How to delete a Rock
Deleting a Rock moves it to the Trash, where it remains recoverable for 90 days. To delete a Rock:
On the Rocks page, click the ellipsis (…) at the end of the Rock's row.
Select Delete from the options shown.
In the warning popup, click Delete to confirm.
Deleting removes the Rock and all its Milestones from the active Rocks page and sends them to the Trash for 90 days.
Tip: If you want to keep a completed or inactive Rock without removing it, archive it rather than delete it. See Archiving and Deleting Rocks.
How to restore a deleted Rock
Restoring a Rock returns it to your team's active Rocks page. To restore a Rock:
Open the Trash by following the steps in "How to view the Rocks Trash" above.
Click the ellipsis (…) at the end of the deleted Rock's row.
Select Restore from the options shown.
The Rock reappears on the team's Rocks page. Restoring a Rock also restores all its Milestones.
Important: Linked items are not restored with a Rock. If you created a linked To-Do, Issue, or Headline from the Rock before deleting it, those links are removed and won't return when you restore the Rock. You'll need to recreate them.
How to permanently delete a Rock
Permanently deleting a Rock removes it from the Trash. Owners, Admins, and Implementers can permanently delete any Rock; Managers and Managees/Team Members can permanently delete only Rocks they own. To permanently delete a Rock:
Open the Trash by following the steps in "How to view the Rocks Trash" above.
Click the ellipsis (…) at the end of the deleted Rock's row.
Select Delete forever from the options shown.
Click Delete Forever from the confirmation popup.
Once a Rock is permanently deleted, it no longer appears in the Trash and cannot be restored on your own. If you need it back, contact support.
Exporting your deleted Rocks
You can export a copy of the Deleted Rocks page for your records. From the Trash, click the ellipsis (…) to open the more actions menu, then choose one of the following:
Print to PDF to save or print the list as a PDF.
Download Excel to export the list as a spreadsheet (.csv).
The export reflects the deleted Rocks shown for the currently selected team.
Good to know about deleted Rocks
Deleted Rocks stay in the Trash for 90 days, then Ninety permanently removes them automatically.
Restoring a Rock also restores all its milestones.
Deleted milestones don't appear as separate items in the Trash; they're restored together with their Rock.
Only Rocks deleted after this feature's release appear in the Trash. Rocks deleted earlier don't have a deletion date and won't be listed.
Linked items (such as a linked To-Do or Issue) are not restored when you restore a Rock.
The Trash is specific to the selected team. Use the Team dropdown to view another team's deleted Rocks.
Troubleshooting
I don't see View Trash in the menu.
The Trash is available to every role except Observer on the Essentials plan and up, and only in the web app (it isn't available in the mobile app). Confirm that you've selected a team from the Team dropdown and that your role isn't Observer.
I restored a Rock, but its linked To-Do or Issue is missing.
Linked items aren't restored when a Rock is restored. Recreate the linked To-Do, Issue, or Headline from the restored Rock's details panel.
I can't permanently delete a Rock.
Managers and Managees/Team Members can permanently delete only the Rocks they own. Ask an Owner, Admin, or Implementer to permanently delete Rocks owned by someone else.
A Rock I deleted isn't in the Trash.
Only Rocks deleted after this feature's release appear in the Trash, and Rocks deleted more than 90 days ago are permanently removed. Confirm you've selected the correct team from the Team dropdown. If a recently deleted Rock still isn't there, contact support.
